Why the cheap job is the urgent one
A stone chip is a small crater with hairline fractures running out of it. Every temperature swing and every pothole works those fractures a little further, and once one reaches a certain length the whole screen has to come out.
Repairing early costs £45 and takes half an hour. Leaving it usually costs at least twice that and a morning of your time.
- Keeps the factory seal. The original bond is never broken, which is always preferable.
- Drive away immediately. No curing time, unlike a replacement.
- Often free on insurance. Many glass policies waive the excess on repairs. Worth checking.
How the repair works
Four stages, about half an hour on your driveway.
Clean the break
Loose glass and moisture come out of the crater. Trapped damp is what makes a repair cloud over later.
Draw a vacuum
A sealed injector pulls the air out of the fracture so resin can reach the very tips of it.
Inject the resin
Optically matched resin is pushed under pressure into every branch of the break.
Cure and polish
Cured hard with UV light, then levelled flush with the glass surface.
Common questions
As a rough guide: smaller than a £2 coin, not at the edge of the glass, and not directly in front of the driver. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly before you book anything.
Not entirely. A good repair restores the strength of the glass and removes most of the visual damage, but a faint mark usually remains where the impact point was. Anyone expecting it to vanish will be disappointed.
About 30 minutes, and you can drive straight away. There is no curing time to wait for as there is with a full replacement.
Yes. A chip is stable until it is not: one cold morning with the heater on full, or one pothole, and it runs into a crack. At that point a £45 job becomes a £90 or more replacement.
